I've long been a lurker and an avid reader. Finally finished most of the rooms in our humble house of horrors. It’s been 4 years in the making (We started with the garden first) and in the past 6 months have been able to do the fun stuff after years of putting right a truly awful ‘development’ by the previous owner.
Its nothing cutting edge but, whenI see the “before” photos, it makes me want to squeal with happiness!
1. Lounge - origanally this was the dining room. The joists were rotten, windows rotten, ceiling anaglypta - and the four walls anaglypta - with an innovative different pattern on each wall!
and after:
The Kitchen.... We lived with what had been a new kitchen when we bought the house... We just retiled the walls and floor.. I loved the floor so didn't change it when we had teh new kitchen fitted.
But (un)luckily the boiler packed in and we were able to move it into the out-house. We took down the chimney (from roof downwards) and had a great space.
Used the left over work surface to make shelves and got a recycled train luggage rack for storage.
The clock that I would have sold my soul for....
This was our old lounge (we decided to swap the rooms) and it's now the dining room.
My other half has kept every gig ticket he's ever been to... He started when he was 13 and I framed them for his birthday (There are 6 of these buggers!!!)
Bedroom before (including Xmas stockings
And after...
And I couldn't resist putting a couple of the garden in. It had been used as a vegetable patch for 30 years. I cleared it and started from scratch. I've no photos from this year as it was full of rubble and by the time we'd cleared it all, there was no summer. The newer pics are from last year.
After: (With my pal in staring role)
And a view from upstairs
Still things to do yet with the house but I've been dying to have something to post.

It looks great! The hallway, big clock and kitchen tiles are my particular favourites. Are the tiles Fired Earth? And where did the clock come from, is it antique?

Wow - what a fantastic job. And what a great post, I loved your narrative all the way through. It is really lovely, and I loved the pic of you sitting in the garden looking so chuffed!! I really like the use of neutral walls and then interesting objects (ticket stubs, lovely clock) displayed against them. Well done, really glad you de-lurked to share with us!!

Blimey... thank you
Sev - The hurricane lamp is a gem of a find - Sainsburys!!! I'd seen some in magazines from Ralph Lauren. Ralph's price? Too much. Sainsburys? I think I got it for under a fiver.
Siane - The tiles are Fired Earth ... Bit of a bargain again... Whoever packed them must have thought each box had a hundred tiles - halfway through tiling there seemed to be loads left and we realised there were around 130 in a box. Yes, I do feel a tad guilty but, the boxes were already open - that's my excuse!
The clock and the luggage rack are from a fantastic place called ...
http://www.trainspotters.uk.com/
I adore their finds... just got to work out a way to win the lottery and be able to go on a splurge.
Thank you for the lovely comments.

Thank you.
I'm a bit of a magpie and love junk shops... The bed is one of the things I am most chuffed with. The head board is actually 2 old doors that I got the carpenter to mount together. I bought them years ago with the intention of making them into a headboard but had to wait to replaster the bedroom and do the ceiling. The mirror is salvaged from the same building - it's a barred window frame but I put a mirror behind the bars.
I fell for them due to the knackered paint ... the photo's don't do them justice so here's an obsessive close up!!

The Xmas tree is from a before photo so even more chuffed - especially as I made all the red glitter angels from salt-dough - I went a bit 'Blue Peter' last year!

Lovely home with some really nice touches, really like the concert ticket frame (may have to steal that idea for husband's football tickets!). Did you use the sticky spray stuff to attach the tickets to the background? Also love the picture wall and am in the process of trying to put one together myself but having trouble finding plain black thin edged frames. The Ribba range from Ikea are a bit too bulky for my wall. Any ideas for cheap black frames other than Ikea?
And just one more thing...... really like your kitchen, can I ask where it's from?

Thank you.
The clock was Trainspotters. The birds and butterflies are from my dad who collects taxidermy... there's also a couple of display boxes of Scarab beetles and other weird insects but they tend to give people the fear and I've yet to find the perfect place to display them ... guest bedroom perhaps? Above the bed?
The tickets were done in a slightly compromised way as my other half had lovingly kept them in a tin and didn't want them damaged, which ruled out spray mount, which is what I would have preferred to use. In the end I used the little sticky foam tabs and they have all stayed in place (fingers crossed). Also he didn't want them to get faded so the only place we could put them was up the stairs. Here's one half of the stair case ...
He also wanted them done in chronological order (as far as possible so there is less 'lay-out design' than I'd have liked). I sound awful really - they were his, but I suspected that they would look fab mounted, so it was a treat for me as well as his birthday pressie.
The kitchen was from Howdens - very much a budget kitchen. I have to give credit to the guys that did it. Known them for years and without their skill it wouldn't be anywhere near as good. For example, when the kitchen floor was tiled, I thought I'd gotten a real bargain with the slate tiles, but they were all extremely different widths and me and the builder sat down and individually picked out my favourite tiles and marked them up. He did such a good job with how even they were laid. He's a complete star - even if he thinks some of the things I ask him to do are a bit odd. For example, he made me 2 tiled draining boards/trays with left over tiles and work surface.
I wasn’t sure if they were going to be a bit OTT and twee, but I think he’s done really well.
The wardrobes for instance are just made from bog standard, Wickes doors. I drew him a picture and then he worked his magic and I'm ashamed to say each door knob ( large crystal ball style) cost more than the rest of the wardrobes put together.
The picture frames are from all over - I've been collecting them for 18 months now. Mainly they are M&S, especially good when they were on offer last year. Some are Ikea, a couple are from Heals (The big multi picture one that you can see reflected in the mirror in the dining room) and I think some of the very wee ones are from habitat. Oh, and from The Range. It became a standing joke at work - I'd pop out for a sandwich and come back with a frame. Also bought a gadget for my mother-in-law to convert her slides into a digital format, so I managed to get some great old photos, as well as our own ones. Then I just photoshopped everything, finally giving them an ever-so-slightly sepia tint to take away from the stark, blue-ish hue when I did them simply black and white.
The last 12 months, the house seemed to be at its worse as no one room was finished and so I sought solace in framing. Lots of trial and error. The first ones I did looked terrible.

Well done sleepygirl! What a gorgeous home you have created, no wonder you are so pleased> Thank goodness you didn't post last month as i would have lost out to you on the prize! So many things i love- the clock, the railways shelves, the beautiful lights over the dining table (pray tell, where are they from?). You even have a cute mini eames chair in your kitchen! I am green with envy! Well done!

Noodle, your home is stunning ... I was very much in awe when I saw it.
The lights in the dining room are from:
http://www.bodieandfou.com
Most of the house has been done up very much on a tight, low budget. We have lots of hand-me-downs and junk shop finds. And I rented in London for many years before moving up here so had time to fantasise and collect my proverbial 'bottom draw'. Majority of the lighting in the house is Ikea from 4/5 years ago but, I had the lust after the dining room lights - it was either them or a new table. The lights won .
It's a tad disrespectful but we use the little eames chair to put the used teabags in. Perhaps one day we'll find an original one (not that I would put teabags on it).

It's lovely! I particularly like the wall of photos, the kitchen (esp floor) and all the lighting effects which give such a nice cosy feel. Nice to see a home which is modern but not Ikea/Habitat obsessed.
The *only* thing I'm not keen on is the painting over the fireplace in the sitting room and the two on either side - they just don't seem to fit at all with the rest of the house? Also, the picture in the hall and the butterflies in the dining room would look better if you hung them a bit lower. (Hope you don't mind me saying, but too-high pictures are a particular niggle of mine).
p.s. nice cat!!

Thanks for the comments - Genuinely don't mind you saying, I appreciate any feedback... what can I say? I hang 'em high, lol.
Had to giggle about the paintings as they were an experiment after a bottle of red wine and a bored afternoon (always get a bit Tony Hart when I've had a few) ... def marmite paintings though.
The paint in lounge is Farrow & Ball 'Pointing'. Dining room and bedroom are F&B Shaded White.
Just trying to dig out some pics from the day I got the keys to the house. Watch this space.

Ok... Have dug out the photos from the day I got the keys to our house. I've only got about 10 and none of garden because of a camera/pc problem at the time. There's several years of interim decoration that was necessary just so that I didn't go utterly bananas whilst waiting / saving for the bigger jobs.
Everyone thought I was mad when I bought the house.... I knew it just needed some love.
Kitchen ... Oh God. That awful colour.. the snot coloured tiles... the boiler ....
Following some interim tiling and floor replacement which we lived with for a couple of years.... we had the final push in the kitchen ..
The chimney coming out ....
The hallway on first day in house... lower part of walls were the same shade as the kitchen .... also we stripped the doors and had the stained glass panel restored as it was being held together with tape
Partway through tiling .... Sorry for blur - phone photo
The master bedroom, just after got keys to the house.
That fireplace took me the whole of Easter weekend this year to strip with nasty, 'orrible chemicals. We used some left-over hallway tiles to finish it off. The workman is a genious and did a fab job with the tiles.
The lounge as it was originally - including the nets circa 1978 (don't think they'd been washed since then either!)... All painted in 'sunny' yellows
The dining room ...
Dining room before the final push this year ... curtains were for privacy only
and a better picture of the finished room.
No wonder I'm so knackered!

I thought the kitchen was Howdens, now how does that place work? I have builders in the family so can use them to go in if I want to purchase anything, but do they have to come with me if I just want to have a look in their showroom? Dont suppose they have any catalogues?.....Have looked on their website but there are no specifications/sizes etc of any of the kitchens.
Thanks

lol, I think I may be. I didn't really think through my first post of before and afters . The original pics were on a disc in the attic and I didn't think I'd find them but, was up there anyway yesterday and found disc and billy-bonus, also found my phone/pc cable so could finally get photos off my phone too.
Must be becuase I've been holding back from posting for so long that now I think I have posting-diarrhea... but also wanted to share the original decoration and, as you say, that kitchen was truly special.
I also found that Howdens will let you have a good browse even if you're not trade.

Hello Lucy. What a wonderful house - it really is inspirational. I've been an avid LE reader for many years and was delighted to see a Stourbridge property winning the award as I live in Wollaston - it's great to see properties outside of London. I was wondering if you could recommend a carpenter? I have several things that need doing and you mention someone who made your bed - the work there speaks for itself. What are you going to do now that your house is complete and so great?!
Best wishes
