Hi, I'm new here so I thought I'd post up a small explanation of what I've been up to. My girlfriend and I just bought a ground floor flat a few months ago in a redeveloped mental insitute. Being 22 and 20 we've been taking it easy on the spending but we can see a difference already. The flat itself is brilliant, it has a bit of character, original brickwork and very high ceilings that give a feeling of lots of space. This is the view from outside (our own front door too!)

So far the living room/kitchen is the only room near to being complete. Here is pics of how it was in the previous owners hands.

The first things we did was fill in any holes (from dodgy sky installation) and cracks in the walls and paint everything white (everywhere was magnolia). The old blinds were removed and now the whole flat has blackout roller blinds. Proper light fittings were also put up here and in the hall (see pics). Other than that there is all our furniture and bits and pieces we have added. Everywhere else has also been painted white but they are all works in progress. The bedrooms have a terrible beige coloured carpet that we are removing and replacing with a slate grey colour.

Bedroom is next, we have a bed that has been on order for almost 3 months arriving soon (black leather with a large black leather headboard), carpet being replaced with slate grey as said before, wallnut cupboards from dwell with black glass doors (ripping out the original ones) and the wall behind the bed papered.
Sorry if the pics focus on individual aspects of the room, they were taken originally to show someone new things we had bought.

you have a very nice place. i love white with oak, i think you made the right choice. we did our whole house in white with oak as the re-ocurring theme. it doesn't look cold because of the natural warmth of the wood.the black really sets it off. you have very understated style as well. you dont have to spend a lot of money to make a place look expensive, well done. the only colour we have is the paper behind our bed. a deep green/blue looks great with oak. post some more when your finished your rooms. ta.

Well done! It looks like you had a pretty fab canvas to begin with, though! I like the simplicity of what you have done; can only presume you have no children or animals - LOL! It looks very fresh and modern, although I must admit I am quite partial to the colours in the "old" window dressings!!!
Congratulations, looking forward to seeing the rest of it in time!

Your place is really cool, very well done! It seems really calm and relaxing. You obviously like Dwell (as do I). Is the tv unit the high gloss one from dwell? If it is, can I ask how wide your tv is?
Excellent work!

Thanks for the comments Adam, really appreciated!
LOL, we have one Bengal cat who will be coming back to live with us after we have finished decorating, here she is

Eames, you are 100% correct. It made sense in this instance to buy a flat that needed little work as there is so little difference in price up this way (Aberdeen area). I would really love to have a proper project to get stuck into, it will probably be our next step as I'm put off most new builds as they lack character (which is what we liked about this place). Aswell as working fulltime I go to college in the evenings so once that is out of the way next year I'll have plenty spare time :-)
panwilliams,
Yep, it is the high gloss unit from Dwell. The only trouble is after getting sky the box cannot get a signal from inside the unit. No problem I thought, I'll get a remote eye signal extender. Turns out this won't work due to interference from the plasma! The tv is 42" btw. I saw a unit very similar to it locally with frosted glass fronts that would allow a signal to pass through but it was too wide (not to mention over a grand more expensive!)
We've made a bit of progress, we have ripped out the fitted wardrobes in the master bedroom and the slate grey carpets are being put down on Wednesday. We ummed and ahhed about whether to put a walse wall in for a cupboard. It looks like we are going with wallnut wardrobes now with black glass doors. I will do an update when we finish that room probably next month.
Thanks for all the comments guys, I only came on here really to get ideas for the bathroom!!
