Before. Help with the after?
      #44366 - 04/10/2008 20:06

I've taken advantage of a rather dramatic leak in my hall ceiling to redecorate. The cornices were ruined and the ceiling really couldn't be patched. With a brand new celing going in, I feel like I could take advantage of its pristine-ness to make a feature of the ceiling or at the very least to do something interesting with paint, but I'm a little overwhelmed with options. I certainly want to replace the cornices with new ones - Victorian in keeping with the age of the house.

I'm a photographer, so tend to decorate with my own black and white prints. I also have a bright turquoise "runner" painted up my stairs that I'm rather fond of.

It's actually all white currently. (Any grey, pink or green is just white balance issues when I took the photos) So, any ideas? I was thinking maybe a pale grey with white trim? Two-tone with a darker grey below the chair rail? A bluey-grey? Is it the done thing to paint the ceiling? Stick with white on white?

See? Totally overwhelmed. Help!

Hi Yolise, I love your hall, including the turquoise 'runner'. I think your first instinct sounds good - a v pale grey, with brilliant white on the ceiling and woodwork.

I would avoid any blue-toned greys as you risk clashing with the turquoise of the stairs, whereas a pure grey would sit well with it. I'd also avoid the 'two-tone' route personally.

The challenge will be to find a grey that doesn't have blue undertones - you don't have to read around this forum for too long to realise that this is a major challenge...! You could try Dulux Grey Steel or Sanderson Silver Wing for starters.

Thank you! My first instinct would have been to to look for a blue-toned grey, so I appreciate the steer away from that. I've just been looking at the greys on the Dulux site and have the Grey Steels in my short list, so that list has got shorter now!

What a fantastic hallway to be working with! very jealous! Good luck with your grey search- I like the sound of that! How about F&B blackened. It may be bluey, but can't remember.

Wow, what a fab hall. Restoring the cornicing sounds heavenly. We live in a Georgian flat with a lowered ceiling (for soundproofing) and I would love to put something nice up on our ceiling so am very jealous!

I love F&B Pavilion Grey which I think has more green than blue tones. I think it's a lovely pale grey but not too wish washy.
