Submit to the playful appeal of Philippe Starck's versatile Toy chair that looks great inside and out
On the cusp of the new millennium, Philippe Starck was commissioned by Driade to create a chair that would work both indoors and outside. Rather than going all-out on the futuristic, Space Odyssey vibe, Starck came up with the Toy chair.
Although made of a thoroughly modern material (polypropylene), and with a practical hole in the seat so rainwater can drain off, the high, enclosed sides give it a fun, cartoonish feel, reminiscent of more innocent times. Perhaps it is this comforting, nostalgic quality that has ensured the Toy chair has reached design-classic status in just eight short years.
