Moda lamp

Switch on innovative style with Mariano Fortuny y Madrazo's chic Moda lamp...

Dim the house lights, this theatrical number is about to have the curtain lifted on its history.

It may look like a Russian Constructivist dream, but this striking lamp preceded that design movement. In fact, it was developed by Spanish artist and designer Mariano Fortuny Y Madrazo in the infant years of the 20th century.

While experimenting with the newly invented electric lightbulb, testing its potential for theatrical staging, Fortuny discovered he could alter and control light quality simply by moving the source or reflecting it off coloured surfaces. Realising he was on to something special, he quickly patented the concave design in 1903.

In 1985, Pallucco Italia took on the manufacturing, so contemporary interiors can still enjoy a little classic design drama.

Stockist: Moda lamp, £2,995, Pallucco Italia at Geoffrey Drayton.
