The iconic tumbler that launched a thousand G&Ts...

Amid the tinkle of ice cubes and chime of glasses at this summer's garden parties, there's a design story lurking.

While you're sipping your G&T, take a look at the tumbler in your hand. Chances are, if it's not actually one of Kaj Franck's Kartio glasses, it has at least been inspired by the well-known minimalist design, produced in the late Fifties for Finnish glass specialist Iittala.

Early problems regulating the colour of the glass from one batch to another led to the range being manufactured in limited colourways – which only served to enhance Franck's commitment to bold, utilitarian design.

Despite technological advances, the restricted palette remains today, proving that a little clear thinking can go a long way – in this case, five decades.

Stockist: Kartio glasses, £11 for a pair; Kartio carafe, £39; all Iittala
